To Worry or Not to Worry

Recently, I had to go to DMV to renew my driver’s license and failed my vision test. I did not wear eye glasses, and the DMV woman gave me a two-month extension to see an eye doctor and return. It took over a month to get the appointment then afterwards I waited another few weeks for the prescribed glasses. During these weeks, I worried. What if I again failed the vision test and could no longer drive? In my head, I created a scenario of an older woman losing her independence. As she lived alone now, she would have to sell her house, move into a senior retirement home and accept the care offerred. This became a shadow cloud that I lived under for almost two months.

I made the appointment with the DMV and before the 40 miinute drive there, I meditated, asking to be able to see both inwardly and outwardly. Burdened by worry, I entered the DMV. Within five minutes, I was seen by another woman, younger and more pleasant. I gave her the proof that I had seen the eye doctor then taking a deep breath prepared for the eye exam.

Oh, an exam is not necessary as you brought the result from the eye doctor.”

After ten minutes, I was told that within two weeks my renewed driver’s license would reach me.

Was this an angel? A DMV angel?

Here’s the lesson: For two months, I had worried about something that never happened. I began to reflect on how many times in my long life had I worried about something that never happened? I concluded that worry is a waste of energy.

If it can be solved, there is no need to worry.                             If it cannot be solved, worry is of no use.
