It’s so confirming as a playwright to know that something you wrote thirty years ago is as relevant today as when it was first written and produced. Several productions later, The Women of Cedar Creek still makes audiences laugh out loud and be moved to tears in the same play.
And this was the play that was so close to home, so based on growing up in Texas, that I was convinced that I would write it and just put it in a drawer. This was the play to exorcise the family ghosts and might not relate to other people. Imagine my surprise when The Women of Cedar Creek won more awards than my other plays! Audiences all over would comment that they saw their sisters, mothers, themselves in this play. I learned a valuable lesson: the universal lies in the specific and not the other way round. I learned how vital it is for writers to dare to be personal and expose their deepest anger, fear, passions, secrets.
I learned that I was not the only one to survive a dysfunctional family.
Freud’s Oracle Premieres at The Ojai Retreat, Ojai, CA
April 9 Sat, 7pm.
Vienna, 1933
“Freud was my portal,
my return to Self”
Freud’s Oracle, written and performed by award-winning actor- playwright Catherine Ann Jones, is a one-person play about the American poet, H.D. and her relationship with Sigmund Freud. H. D. suffered great personal losses and a nervous breakdown due to the Great War and became Freud’s patient in 1933 because of an increasing paranoia about the rise of Hitler and the fear and certainty that another world war was coming.
The themes are the travesty of war and the triumph of the individual spirit.
