Sharing your story is a way to reconnect

Still on the road teaching though I’m cutting back on trips to Europe, UK, and Asia. The plan is to teach more in California and be here more, working as a writing consultant and completing a new book, Heal Your Self with Writing ( Divine Arts Media, Aug 2013).

When asked recently to present a new seminar, I chose the theme of Transcending a Time of Unknowing. This past year has been such a time for many of us –both personally and collectively. This is why in uncertain times, doing the necessary inner work to hold balance is vital.

Just when I’m alone in my corner writing and feel cut off from the outer world, something happens to remind me how interconnected we all are. Quite recently, I received a long, handwritten, and amazing letter from a Native American prisoner in Chaparral, NM, who had somehow found a copy of my book, The Way of Story: the craft & soul of writing. Nathaniel is a descendent of Apache warriors, whose great-grandfather rode with Geronimo. Here are two excerpts from his letter: “I was blessed to get hold of a copy of your most wonderful book, The Way of Story. You are deserving of my deepest gratitude and praise.” Nathaniel writes of imagining he is an eagle soaring free: “I would love to just spread my wings on the highest branch overlooking the dark canyons and sense that there is nothing but a day of flight in store for me…” This response to The Way of Story was a gift reminding me that the best moments in life arise unasked and unexpected. May the coming year deliver a bounty of gifts to all of you.

This week with the terrible tragedy in Connecticut, I am reminded of how important it is for us to reach out and share our stories with one another. Community is sitting around a fire and sharing one’s story.

This holiday season, instead of being swept along in the commercial and party rush, share your story with at least one other person. Imagine no matter where you are that you are sitting around a fire and sharing your story.  Dare to share your feelings as well. Through stories, we tap into the interconnection of us all.

Here’s to a peaceful and joyous holiday for all.
