Writing from the Unconscious
Writing from the Unconscious

Due to some medical challenges and house repairs, the writing of a new book
has been set aside. Last month, in March, an odd thing happened and more than once. As if my conscious mind had stopped writing during the day, at night during sleep, the unconscious took over and began to create poems. Hence, upon awakening, a poem would arrive in tact. Here are two examples:
COCOON
Upon awaking, a cloud of malaise encircles.
America, a country created by immigrants,
Now a country at war with itself,
Moral fatigue from watching the daily news
Causes a routine retreat
To a remembered fetal safe haven
Nowhere to go, nothing to do,
Day becomes Night, Night, Day.
Turning within,
Safely leaving the maddening world behind,
Covers over my head
Returning to the primal cocoon:
Bed.
TIME CYCLES BACK
They say that Nero danced and played
as Rome was burning.
Quick! Give the man a fiddle
while in resigned horror
We watch today as the world burns
once again…
I feel as though since my conscious mind stopped writing, the unconscious said, “OK, if you won’t write during the day, I’ll take over and do it.”
Another curious thing. I wrote poems from the age of 7 until I was 26 then wrote plays, films, television, and books – but no poems – until now.
I think writing has its own magical timing and process. All we must do is not get in the way. And who knows, perhaps soon outer distractions will subside, allowing the conscious writer to return once again.
